Subject: Harbors - Virginia - Alexandria - Potomac River - Aerial Views

Notes: Relief shown pictorially.  View oriented westward from the Potomac River.  Indexed for points of interest.  Shows the city during federal occupation in 1863.  A bustling port is depicted with street grids and patterns, buildings, and landscapes shown as they appeared to the artist, but from an angled height of 1,000 to 2,000 feet.  Houses and other buildings are recognizable, such as Roundhouse for the trains in the upper left section and the Voorhees' house in the lower left section of the map.  A perspective map, this format was very popular during the 19th century, used to encourage commercial development.

Alan M. Voorhees Collection - The Alan M. Voorhees Map Collection extends from the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle through the U.S. Civil War period with the bulk of the collection consisting of pre20th century maps. In a variety of map formats, such as nautical charts and views, the collection focuses primarily on the Chesapeake Bay area and the development of Virginia within the larger geographical and historical contexts of Europe and America.
