The Library of Virginia established the Dictionary of Virginia Biography project to foster greater awareness of the richness and variety of Virginia's past. The Dictionary of Virginia Biography (DVB) is a multivolume historical reference work providing biographical information about those Virginians who, regardless of place of birth or death, made significant contributions to the history or culture of their locality, state, or nation.

This classified index references the first volume of the DVB, which contains 477 biographies. At the conclusion of the project a cumulative index to the DVB will be published as the final volume.
