This Gold Star Honor Roll of Virginians in the Second World War constitutes a record of 8,777 persons associated with Virginia who died from any cause whatsoever while serving in the armed forces of the United Nations between 1940-1946, of 11 persons who died as a result of service-connected causes after discharge from the armed forces, and of 149 persons who died from various causes while serving in certain civilian organizations which have been auxiliary to the armed forces of the United States. The names of the war dead are classified by counties and cities in accordance with the mailing address of their respective nearest survivors, and an alphabetical index enables one to locate readily the listing of any person whose next-of-kin's address may not be known. In addition to the names of the Gold Star Honor Roll personnel, the volume identifies as completely as has been possible their ranks, their branches of service, and the relationships, names, and post offices of their nearest survivors. The period covered by this Honor Roll is from September 16, 1940, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Selective Service Act, through December 31, 1946, when President Harry S Truman proclaimed the termination of "hostilities." Edited by W. Edwin Hemphill. Published in 1947 by the Virginia World War II History Commission.
