Relief shown pictorially. "Entered according to Act of Congress A.D. 1864 by Chas. Magnus in the Clerk's Office of the S. District of N.Y." A panoramic view of a portion of Alexandria, with the large fenced Soldier's Rest compound as the focus. Inside the compound are barracks-style buildings, figures in blue uniforms, some in formation, and a raised American flag. To the right of the compound fence are rows of tents, and on the far side, several trains and beyond them, possibly more of the compound and the town of Alexandria. In the upper left side of the view are a railroad roundhouse, with trains and soldiers, and buildings labeled "Soldiers Rest U.S. Sanitary Commission" and "Sanitary Commission Lodge for Invalid Soldiers."
