This volume is a compilation of most of the places existing in Virginia during the last half of the nineteenth century that serves to identify where further "directory" information on these places and their inhabitants may be found. This List attempts to show the first appearance of a place in any 19th-century Virginia directory and the first separate local directory for that place; most of the places listed are small towns or villages for which no separate directories have ever been published. It does not contain the names of places which came into existence after 1900 or places which had disappeared before the local directories were published, nor does it contain references to all the directories in which a place appears. Despite its brevity, it remains a valuable research tool for those interested in exploring their family history and genealogy.
